How does a person’s view of salvation influence everyday life?

If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to God), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).

—SURA 3:85

Both Christianity and Islam are exclusive. Both faiths demand utmost obedience to their claims. If someone disregards their warnings and principles, that person does so at his own peril. If the religion is correct and an individual attempts another way to God, he loses his own soul eternally in the process (sura 3:56; John 3:18). In Islam, the believer must bow the “whole self” (sura 2:112) to Allah, an act most perfectly demonstrated through prayer. The Qur’an commands, “Bow down your heads with those who bow down (in worship)” (sura 2:43).

A life lived according to the dictates of Islam is easily identifiable. As the Qur’an details, true Muslims are

those who show patience, firmness and self-control; who are true (in word and deed); who worship devoutly; who spend (in the way of God); and who pray for forgiveness in the early hours of the morning (sura 3:17).

Even the Islamic Jesus demanded that all people, including him, bow to Allah as the “Way that is straight” (sura 3:51).

Christians may quickly notice that Islam’s traits of discipleship are strikingly similar to those found within the New Testament. After all, Christians are also called to have “patience…gentleness and self control” (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV). Prayer is to be the lifeline of the believer in Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and “word and deed” must accompany any true faith (James 1:22).

Yet once again, the words are common to the two religions, but their meanings fully differ. Most important, Jesus’ place has been uprooted. In Islam, Jesus is no longer the “Way, the Truth, and the Life,” nor is he the way to have “life…abundantly” (John 14:6; 10:10). Islam (which means submission to Allah) has replaced any such notion of the biblical Jesus and has damned anyone who holds these beliefs to the lowest levels of hell (sura 4:56; 5:72).

People can easily be deceived into thinking that Islam displays a far more devout faith than that of Christianity. That would be a horrible mistake. Islam is a religious system based on meticulous laws that, if followed, lead to only the hope of Paradise. As a result, devout Muslims must pray diligently and give charitably, fast properly, and make the pilgrimage to Mecca (sura 2:43,184-185, 196-203). Without strict adherence to all of these demands, Muslims have little hope of reward.
